THE HISTORY
Popularized in the late-18th Century, vinaigrette boxes hosted either a hard aromatic or vinegar soaked sponge. Pomanders were typically larger, often spherical, and contained fragrant solid materials, like herbs or spices, used for protection against disease or unpleasant smells. Vinaigrettes, on the other hand, were smaller, hinged containers, often made of silver or gold, holding a porous material soaked in scented vinegar or other aromatic liquids. They were used for quick inhalation of restorative or refreshing scents, particularly to counteract unpleasant odors.
