Victorian Gold-Filled Double-Sided Rock Crystal Locket

The History:

This Victorian oval locket features two domed, transparent rock crystal halves surrounded by warm gold-filled frames. The hinged construction opens to reveal two compartments designed to hold photographs, miniature portraits, or other personal keepsakes, while a simple ring bail allows the piece to be worn as a pendant. 

Crystal lockets became popular during the nineteenth century, when sentimental jewelry was frequently used to preserve photographs, locks of hair, and other meaningful mementos. Unlike traditional metal lockets, transparent crystal panels allowed their contents to remain visible while offering protection. The understated design of this example emphasizes the clarity of the crystal and the simplicity of its oval form.

This piece mesures 2" tall from the bottom of the piece to the top of the bail, 1 ¼" wide while closed, 2" wide while open. This piece was originally made and sourced in England.
