Victorian Guitar Vinaigrette Pendant

The Story:

This Victorian gold-filled vinaigrette from the late 1800s is fashioned in the shape of a miniature guitar, with an intricately engraved body featuring scrolling foliate motifs, a decorative fretboard, and an openwork sound hole. The hinged case opens to reveal a pierced interior grille, originally designed to hold a small piece of sponge or fabric saturated with aromatic substances.

The History:

Vinaigrettes were popular personal accessories throughout the nineteenth century, carried to provide a pleasant scent or to counteract unpleasant odors. Often crafted in silver or gold and decorated with elaborate engraving, these small containers were produced in a variety of novelty shapes, including musical instruments, books, and other familiar objects. This guitar-shaped example reflects the Victorian interest in miniature craftsmanship and functional jewelry designed with decorative appeal.

This piece measures 1 ¾" in height from the bottom of the piece to the top of the bail,  ¾" wide, and shows wear consistent with age.

We recommend pairing this pendant with our Classic Gold Rolo Chain, Classic Silver Rolo Chain, Classic Slim Gold Omega Necklace, or Classic Small Gold Omega Necklace.
