Victorian Peace Dove Seal
The Story:
- This Victorian banded agate fob charm features a hand-etched peace dove in the bottom with a gold gilt cap and original bail. During this era, fobs were used to create a stamp with hot wax to seal correspondence.
This piece was originally made and sourced in England and measures 1.25" tall and 0.5" wide from the bottom of the piece to the top of the bail. Please note this piece shows light wear consistent with age.
THE HISTORY:
Throughout history, doves have been a symbol of gentleness and beauty - they are the animal of Venus (Aphrodite), the goddess of love. Her son Cupid (Eros) has the wings of a dove. Doves have also been ancient symbols of the soul, spirit, or human life force, and represent this in some allegorical and mourning compositions. The Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit, is represented as a radiant dove in religious compositions.
