This one-of-a-kind necklace is composed of:

Victorian, sterling silver swallow dress pin from the late 1800s with turquoise stones set in the design. This sweet, petite swallow also features garnet eye and hand engraved feather details. This piece was originally made and sourced in England.
This necklace measures a standard 18” on a 14k gold filled chain. The pendant measures .75" in height.

THE HISTORY:

Birds were a popular symbol in the Victorian era and were a common motif in jewelry. Swallows and doves in particular adorned all kinds of pieces. Swallows mate for life and always go back to their nest, so it made sense for them to be on jewelry that lovers would give to each other. The birds were a popular symbol for sailors as well: spotting a them in the sky was the first sign their ship was close to land where they would return to their loved ones.
