The History:

This Victorian sterling silver locket from the 1800s features a raised horse's head in profile with a riding crop in 9k gold. The front has hand engraved floral details with the original frame still inside.  A modern sterling silver swivel clasp has been added to the locket.

Equestrian motifs were common in nineteenth-century British decorative arts and jewelry, reflecting the importance of horses in transportation, agriculture, and sporting activities such as riding, racing, and hunting. The contrasting metals distinguish the central horse motif from the surrounding engraved details. The locket has a hinged construction that opens to reveal a small interior compartment designed to hold a photograph or personal keepsake.

This piece was originally made and sourced in England and shows wear consistent with age. This piece measures just over 1.5" in length including the swivel clasp and approximately 0.6625" in width.
