The History:

This Victorian figaro chain is crafted in sterling silver and features a repeating pattern of elongated rectangular links alternating with smaller oval connecting links. The longer links are decorated with fine black niello striping, creating a distinctive contrast against the polished silver surfaces. The chain features a sterling silver T-bar toggle and an antique swivel clasp closure, both characteristic fittings found in Victorian jewelry.

Niello is a traditional metalworking technique in which a dark metallic compound, typically composed of silver, copper, and sulfur, is applied to engraved recesses in a metal surface. Once polished, the niello remains within the recessed areas, producing precise black detailing against the surrounding silver. The technique dates back to antiquity and was used extensively in European decorative metalwork, including jewelry produced during the Victorian era.

This example combines the alternating proportions of a figaro chain with finely striped niello decoration. The repeated detailing along the elongated links creates a consistent pattern throughout the piece, while the T-bar toggle and swivel clasp reflect the practical construction of nineteenth-century chains.

This piece was originally made and sourced in England.

This necklace measures 27" in length.
