Victorian Niello Striped Chain with Twisted Links

Sale price$935.00

The History:

This Victorian chain is crafted in sterling silver and features alternating sections of polished curb links and elongated decorative links with fine black niello striping. The larger links incorporate an open, interwoven design, with overlapping silver elements that create a twisted appearance. The contrasting dark and polished surfaces emphasize the intricate construction of these decorative sections. A substantial circular bolt clasp repeats the niello striping, creating a consistent pattern throughout the piece.

Niello is a traditional metalworking technique in which a dark metallic compound, typically composed of silver, copper, and sulfur, is applied to engraved recesses in a metal surface. Once polished, the niello remains within the recessed areas, producing precise black detailing against the surrounding silver. The technique dates back to antiquity and was used in European decorative metalwork, including jewelry produced during the Victorian era.

This example combines traditional curb links with more elaborate interwoven elements, incorporating niello decoration into both the elongated links and circular clasp. The variation in link shapes and surface detailing reflects the decorative metalworking techniques employed in nineteenth-century jewelry. The oversized bolt clasp also provides an attachment point for pendants, lockets, and charms.

This piece was originally made and sourced in England.

This necklace measures 17' in length.
