Georgian ‘LE FROID ME CHASSE’ Swallow and Diamond Seal

The History:

This French crafted, Georgian-era seal pendant features an ornate openwork mount set with rose cut diamonds, combining a floral centerpiece with gracefully curved, symmetrical detailing. The sterling upper section contrasts with a warm rose 14k gold base, engraved with a spiraling pattern. Beneath the mount is an oval bloodstone seal, etched with a with a swallow and the French motto ‘LE FROID ME CHASSE’—‘The cold drives me away’—the imagery evokes the bird’s seasonal journey toward warmer skies, with a possible allusion to the warmth we seek in love and friendship. 

The swallow was a familiar motif in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sentimental jewelry, often associated with affection, fidelity, and the hope of reunion. Together, the bird and inscription suggest a personal message of remembrance across distance. The combination of a decorative diamond-set mount and an engraved seal reflects the Georgian tradition of jewelry that served both ornamental and personal purposes.
