The History:

This exquisite Victorian scent bottle pendant features a delicately carved, translucent stone vessel in the shape of a scallop shell, finished with an ornate sterling silver cap and suspended from a fine chain. This piece is distinguished by its beautifully fluted carving, softly luminous stone, and intricately decorated hinged cap, which opens to reveal the bottle's narrow mouth. The shell has a pinhole on either side just below the neck, making it unsuitable for holding liquid.

During the nineteenth century, miniature perfume bottles and scent flasks were fashionable personal accessories, allowing their owners to carry a favorite fragrance throughout the day. Often suspended from chatelaines or worn as pendants, these intimate objects combined everyday practicality with extraordinary craftsmanship. The scallop shell was a particularly romantic decorative motif, associated with the sea, travel, and the classical goddess Venus.  This pendant is a wonderful survivor of the Victorian tradition of carrying fragrance as both a personal luxury and a beautiful ornament.

This piece was originally made and sourced in England and shows wear consistent with age.

This piece measures just over 3" in length including the bail. The bottle itself measures just over 1.5" in length and just over 1" in width. This piece was originally made and sourced in England and shows wear consistent with age.
