Athena Victorian Silver Owl & Bamboo Locket

The History:

This enchanting Victorian locket features a beautifully detailed owl perched among delicate bamboo branches, surrounded by intricate geometric engraving and stylized floral motifs. Comprised of sterling silver, this locket shows excellent craftsmanship with detailed hand engravings on the facing. The contrast between the finely engraved background and the raised, naturalistic owl creates a wonderful sense of depth and texture. Opening to reveal two compartments intended for treasured photographs or personal mementos, this unusual locket beautifully combines Victorian sentimental tradition with the period's appreciation for Eastern-inspired ornament.

During the nineteenth century, owls were admired as symbols of wisdom, knowledge, and watchfulness, their association with the Greek goddess Athena lending them an enduring air of mystery. The surrounding bamboo and decorative patterns reflect the Victorian fascination with Japanese art and design, a movement known as Japonisme that flourished in Britain during the latter half of the century.

This piece was originally made and sourced in England and shows wear consistent with age.
