ART DECO REPLICA OF GRANDMOTHER'S RING
Our client's heirloom ring inherited from her grandmother.
Our client brought us her grandmother's stunning heirloom ring with the hope to get it resized to fit her. With the ring originating from the early 1900s, and holding a stunning old mine cut center diamond, it would have been near impossible to jump the needed sizes without losing detail to the setting or compromising the original setting.
Additionally, the setting was simply too small for diamond. With the emergence of the industrial revolution in the 1900s, this made mass manufacturing of settings readily available to jewelers--and that is exactly what this setting was: a pre-made setting retrofitted to hold a diamond. In reality, this stone was just a bit too big for the setting.
The prongs were simply way too thin to restore as well. After talking through design options, our client entrusted us to make a complete replica of the original setting. So we unset the stone and sent our client's setting off to our CAD designer to be 3D scanned with the goal to not only make as close of a replica as possible, but slightly alter the design for the stone to set more secure in a bezel setting.

In order to not only increase the ring size to fit our client, but set the diamond in a lower bezel setting, the design had to be widened with the milgrain and pattern also slightly altering--all while trying to maintain the integrity of the original design.
To ensure a good fit and give our client peace of mind with the final CAD design, we had a 3D wax model printed to scale for her to see and try on in person.

The end result truly ended up being a near identical recreation of her grandmother's ring. A design that she could not only safely wear, but a setting that was specifically designs and made to fit her diamond's precise dimensions. Plus, the white gold bezel design made this large diamond appear even bigger compared to it's old setting (which is never a bad problem to have).
